PDX Seamsters - Learn to sew by making what you want (DIY Bloomers! class)

Not just your grandmothers underwear!

Bloomers have experienced a recent return to popularity both as fashion and functional layer, fun to wear for day or night, at summer festivals, a swim suit cover-up or under a skirt while you're riding your bike. Make a short pair for under a flirty sundress or a long pair for hanging out in the garden.

This class is perfect for a beginner or intermediate seamster who wants to learn to make pants, boxer shorts or costume basics. Bloomers will feature either elastic or drawstring waistband in a fold over casing, an optional applied casing to install ruffle as well as a review of ideas and techniques for applying basic ruffled or pleated embellishments. We will have multiple patterns on had for students to copy, use and take with them.
Yardage estimates:

Short bloomers, top of thigh- 1 yard 45"-60" wide fabric*
knee length bloomers- 1 1/2 yard 45"- 60" wide*
calf or ankle length bloomers- 2 yards 45"- 60" wide fabric*

optional 1" wide single fold bias tape for applied casing- 1-2 packs, dependent on bloomer fullness.

* if you would like have a bloomer with more fullness or details such as ruffles make sure to purchase an additional 1/2 to 1 yard of fabric.
Please arrive to class with your fabric pre-shrunk!

It is important to pre-shrink your fabric FIRST so your project will maintain it's size after laundering.

The rule of thumb is to pretreat the fabric in the fashion you would launder the garment. EX: dry clean silk for a dress you intend to dry clean

Through mastering casting on, a few basic stitches and getting a beginning project underway you are developing the foundation necessary to take it to the next level.

Bring your own machine, or use ours.

In this class we will focus on the terminology and mechanics of the sewing machine. All materials for this class are included in the tuition, you will leave with a series of sewn samples and reference handouts.
Beginner's Sewing Essentials
Sew a centered zipper, machine button-hole, and fold-over casing.

Take your sewing to the next level by learning a few simple tricks that will help your sewing be more successful. This class is intended for students who have basic sewing machine experience and know how to thread a machine and bobbin, sew straight lines, back stitch and zigzag.
