Portlanders are an independent lot with unique needs -- experienced clothier and Portland native Emily Horton of M-Horton Clothing enables the DIY-inclined by hosting the PDX SEAMSTERS Drop-In Sewing Studio. Those who drop-in (by reservation) avail themselves to a fully stocked 1,000 sq.ft. professional sewing work room replete with several industrial, overlock, and home sewing machines, as well as fabrics, notions and the tools of the trade. Emily shares her years of experience during open studio, answering any questions about design elements, fabric choices, and construction techniques. Sew and alter your clothes with the confidence and expert assurance afforded by Emily’s years of practical garment and apparel design experience.

Tucked in the SE industrial arts warehouse district, on the corner of SE 9th Avenue and Washington Street, PDX SEAMSTERS Drop-In Sewing Studio feels spacious and well-lit. The sewing studio can be setup to produce small production runs, one of a kind custom garments, and more usually configured as a cooperative working space for up to ten sewing clients.

Emily Horton began sewing at an early age, making her own costumes and clothing. This led to a career in costume design. Studying first at the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts, she later graduated from Webster University with a degree in costume design and construction. In her professional career Horton has traveled far and wide making costumes for film, stage and theme park attractions, as well as touring nationally with both The San Francisco Opera and The Acting Company. A career artist, Horton has worked in the costume shops of American Conservatory Theater, The San Francisco Opera, Parsons Meares and Michael Curry Design is Scappoose, OR as well as behind the scene with the Portland Opera, Berkeley Repertory Theater, and Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum.
