There have been many advancements in sewing machine production in the last 40 years, mainly involving plastics and computers, two things I consider negative in my sewing machine. The mechanics of the guts of the machine have remained very much the same series of gears, rods and cams. There is a sweet spot in the manufacturing of sewing machines between the 1930's and the 1960's where technology and engineering were excellent but the incorporation of plastics into the manufacturing are not yet the norm. These are the machines we focus on, all metal gears, metal bodies and strong motors that perform well at high and low speeds. The fact remains that $200. spent on a newly manufactured main stream sewing machine is getting you a disposable and light weight 'boat anchor' and for around the same from us you can pick up the next functional heirloom machine that will sew for years to come.
